Osaka has not won a title this season, although she has shown a high level of tennis, reaching the Bad Homburg final and the Wimbledon quarterfinals. She began her Beijing campaign in the second round, defeating Maria Timofeeva, who represents Uzbekistan – 6:3, 3:6, 6:3. She then overcame Czech player Sara Bejlek in two sets – 7:6, 6:4.
Osaka is capable of achieving an excellent result and could even challenge for the title.

The rivals have a rich history of head-to-head meetings, with eight matches in total and the score currently tied at 4-4. Some sources may list the Czech player as leading 4-3, because one match was not completed after Muchova withdrew.
