Spain LaLiga History
The idea for the Spanish LaLiga was first brought up by José María Acha in 1928. After debates about eligibility and the size of the league, the Primera Division was founded in 1929. Real Madrid, Barcelona, Athletic Bilbao, Real Union, Arenas, Real Sociedad, Europa, Espanyol, Racing de Santander, and Atlético Madrid were all selected as the league’s first ten teams. Qualifications were based on previous performances in the Copa Del Rey and a special knockout competition.
The league expanded to include 12 teams in 1934 and then 16 in 1950. After almost four decades, they finally adopted the 20-team format in 1987 and have maintained it ever since. Barcelona, Real Madrid, and Athletic Bilbao are the only teams since the inception of the league to have not suffered relegation.
Barcelona won the first-ever edition of the league and has gone on to win 26 titles since then. However, they are behind Real Madrid, which is the league's most successful club with 36 titles. Atlético Madrid is third on the list, having won 11, with their most recent coming in the 2020/21 season. Athletic Bilbao has won the title 8 times, while Valencia has won it 6 times. The only other teams on the winners list are Real Sociedad, Deportivo La Coruña, Sevilla, and Real Betis.
Structure of the Spanish League
The Spanish LaLiga, like many other European leagues, uses the round-robin format where every team has to play each other twice in home and away fixtures. There are currently 20 teams, each with an individual total of 38 games to play every season. When you consider all teams, 380 matches are played from the start of the league in August till the end in May.
Every match is worth three points, which goes to the winner of the game. If the game ends in a tie, both teams are awarded a point each. After the final game of the season, the team with the most points on LaLiga table is crowned champions.
If more than one team has the same number of points, the title is decided by the head-to-head goal difference between the two teams. If there are more than two teams with the same points, the head-to-head points among them are used first, and then the head-to-head goals are used if the tie has still not been broken. Goal difference and fair play are final tiebreakers, but the chances of their being used are very rare.
European Qualification
Each season, clubs fight not only for the chance to be called the champions of Spain but also for highly coveted spots in prestigious European competitions like the UEFA Champions League, UEFA Europa League, and the UEFA Conference League.
The winners of the league get automatic qualification to the group stages of the Champions League along with the second, third, and fourth-placed teams. The fifth-placed side earns a spot in the group stages of the Europa League, while the team that finishes sixth qualifies for the UEFA Conference League play-off round.
There are some cases where these qualification criteria might change. For example, the Copa Del Rey champions automatically qualify for the Europa League, and if they happen to finish fifth in the Spanish league table too, the team that finished sixth also qualifies for the Europa League, while the Conference League play-off spot goes to the seventh-placed team.
Relegation
Down at the bottom side of the table, there’s another battle going on as teams struggle to earn their place in the top flight for the following season. At the end of the season, the bottom three teams on the table are relegated to the Segunda Division. The top two teams in the Segunda Division earn promotion to LaLiga, while the third, fourth, fifth, and sixth-place teams enter a playoff for the final promotion spot.
2024/2025 LaLiga Season Overview
The 2023/2025 LaLiga season will be the 94th edition of the prestigious league and will once again feature the 20 best teams from Spain battling for a chance to be crowned champions of the nation. Over €500 million was spent in the summer transfer window to bring talents into the league, with big hitters like Kylian Mbappe, Julian Alvarez, Dani Olmo, Conor Gallagher, and Sebastian Haller among the notable names.
Real Madrid are the reigning champions and will be looking to fend off Hansi Flick’s band of eager youngsters and Simeone’s new army in their quest for title number 37. The league will also get six European spots, so there’s so much to fight for throughout the season. Here are some of the things you need to know.
Top Upcoming Head-to-Head Matches
The most anticipated game in the Spanish LaLiga by far is the El Classico, and with both teams featuring some of the world’s best players like Kylian Mbappe, Robert Lewandoski, and Vinicius Junior, it’ll definitely be one of the games that decide the title this season. The Madrid Derby is another fierce Spanish rivalry where the stakes are just as high. Backed by new signings Julian Alvarez, Conor Gallagher, and Alexander Sorloth, Diego Simeone will be looking to secure his first LaLiga title since the 2020/21 season.
European spots will also be hard-fought this year, with Villareal and Athletic Club among favorites for the final UCL spot, while Real Betis, Osasuna, and Real Sociedad hope for a place in the Europa and Conference League.
Down at the bottom of the table, Espanyol is back to LaLiga after a season in the second tier and will be hoping to stay up this season. They’ll be battling with fellow promoted teams Leganés and Valladolid to avoid the drop, as well as Las Palmas, Alaves, and Getafe, who have been in the relegation scrap for the past few seasons.
With fierce battles at both ends of the table, this season promises high-stakes matches, unforgettable rivalries, and intense competition for European spots and survival. We’ll keep you updated with all the highlights, team progressions, and LaLiga predictions as the race for glory unfolds.
Key Players and Rising Stars
As with every season, certain stars will shine brighter than others and lead their team in the pursuit of Spanish glory. Lamine Yamal is one of the names already on everyone’s lips. It’s been a year of dreams for arguably the best youngster in LaLiga today, who became the youngest player to win a Euros and also the Kopa Trophy. He also got his first El Classico goal under Flick and leads the leagues in assists, while his fellow teammate Robert Lewandowski is the top scorer.
Vinicius Junior is another star who many will be expecting to perform this season. After slightly missing out on the Ballon d’Or, the Brazillian forward will be rejuvenated and ready to lead Los Blancos to their second consecutive title. He’ll be joined by Madrid’s new signing and World Cup winner, Kylian Mbappe, who will be looking to make an instant impact on his debut season.
Ayoze Pérez is another summer signing to watch out for; with seven goals already in his first 12 games with the Yellow Submarine, he’s one LaLiga top scorers this season and will be pivotal in Villareal’s push for European spots this year.
With these players set to make an impact, this LaLiga season promises plenty of excitement. Stay connected with our page for the latest LaLiga predictions and tournament updates, we’ll keep you informed on every twist and turn in the journey to crown Spain’s next champions.
