Current Standings and Scores

With almost half of the season already played, Paris Saint-German is yet to lose a game and has racked up 12 wins and 4 draws in the process. They are comfortably first in the league, and based on major Ligue 1 predictions, they look set for their fourth consecutive title.

Marseille and Monaco are also having amazing seasons and look set for the remaining Champions League phase spots. However, they must be wary of Lille and Lyon, who are in the top five but actively fighting for direct qualification. In the middle of the park, newly promoted Auxerre has been performing above expectations and might be looking at consecutive seasons in the first division. They currently sit in 8th place and have managed 6 wins from their 15 games so far.

Montpellier, Le Havre, and Saint-Étienne are the teams currently in the relegation zone, with Angers and Nantes not too far behind. History and Format France Ligue 1

Ligue 1, or Ligue 1 McDonald’s for sponsorship reasons, is the premier football league in France and was founded in 1932. Twenty clubs were allowed to join the inaugural edition of the league provided they had good results in the past, enough revenue to balance their finances, and could recruit at least eight professional footballers.

The first season was called National and featured 20 teams, including Cannes, Lille, Montpellier, Nice, Marseille, Nîmes, Rennes, and Metz. Teams were divided into two groups of ten, with the bottom three of each group facing relegation to the second division. The two top teams faced each other at a neutral venue, and in the first final held at the Stade Olympique Yves-du-Manoir, the now-defunct Olympique Lillois defeated Cannes by four goals to three.

After the first season, the league changed its name to Division 1, and the number of teams was set at 16. This increased to 18 in 1945 and then 20 from the 1965–66 season. The league officially became known as Ligue 1 in 2002, and in 2023, it returned to its 18-team format.

The 18 teams in the France Ligue 1 table play against each other in home and away fixtures, getting three points for a win and one for a draw. At the end of the 34th game week, the team with the most points are crowned champions. If multiple teams have similar points, their goal difference and the goals scored are used to determine the champion.

The top three teams in the final Ligue 1 standings earn automatic qualification to the Champions League league phase, while the 4th-placed team has to enter the third qualifying round. The 5th-placed team makes it to the Europa League phase, with the 6th-placed team qualifying for the Conference League play-off round.

At the bottom of the table, the two last-placed teams suffer automatic relegation to the second division, while the 16th-placed team will face off against the winner of the Ligue 2 play-off semi-final in home and away fixtures.

French Ligue 1 24/25 Season Predictions

The 2024/2025 Ligue 1 season is the 87th in the competition’s history and one that promises lots of excitement. Last year, Paris Saint-Germain clinched their third consecutive title, extending their run as the most successful club in the country with 12 trophies.

This year, though, things would be a bit different as for the first time since 2016–17, the club would be playing without their key man and record goalscorer Kylian Mbappe, who moved to Spanish giants Real Madrid in the summer.

However, PSG remains the favourite for the title again, with big names like Marco Asensio, Ousmane Dembélé, Vitinha, and Achraf Hakimi ever ready to step up. The club also boasts some exciting youngsters, like Bradley Barcola, Désiré Doué, and João Neves, who’ll be looking to fill the Frenchman’s shoes.

PSG would also have to be wary of Marseille, who, under the leadership of Roberto De Zerbi, are expected to play some exciting attacking football this season. Marseille will be gunning for their first title since 2010 but might have to settle for qualification to the Champions League phase. Lyon, Nice, Lille, and Monaco are other teams that will have their eyes set on European football next season.

Meanwhile, on the other side of the table, promoted sides Saint-Étienne and Angers will have their work cut out for them to avoid relegation. Le Havre narrowly escaped the drop last season, but might face an even harder challenge staying up this year.

All eyes will be set on stars like Jonathan David, Lee Kang-in, Luis Henrique, Ousmane Dembélé, and Bradley Barcola to lead the goalscoring charts this season. Strasbourg also had an exciting preseason, with young Andrey Santos on loan from Chelsea expected to be among the league’s most exciting talents, according to our France League 1 prediction.
