About FA Cup
Seven years after the formation of the Football Association in 1863, the committee decided to host a flagship competition that would feature all clubs that have registered with the Association. It was called the Football Association Challenge Cup and debuted in the 1871–72 season. 15 teams participated in the first FA Cup tournament, with the now-defunct Wanderers winning the maiden title at the Kennington Oval in London. Since then, the number of participating teams has increased greatly, and in the 2011–12 season, the competition recorded its highest-ever number of teams —763.
All English teams down to Level 9 in the league system are eligible to enter the competition. There’s no seeding when drawing rounds, but to avoid early mismatches, the higher-ranked teams are excluded from the competition to the final rounds.
The competition starts in August, with the initial six rounds acting as qualifiers. 32 teams from the qualifiers will enter the final six rounds, which is the main competition that starts in November. The first round will feature the 48 teams from the English League One and League Two plus 32 teams from the previous qualifying rounds in 40 knockout fixtures. The 40 winners from these fixtures will go on to battle in the Second Round held in December, where a further 20 teams will be eliminated.
The Third Round is where you start to see the big names as 44 teams from the English Premier League and Championship join in on the action. They are drawn together with the 20 winners from the prior round in 32 exciting FA Cup final fixtures. You then have the Fourth Round that eliminates 16 teams, and the Fifth Round that further reduces the number of teams to 8. The Quarter Finals are then held in March, and then the Semi-Finals the following month.
FA Cup 2024/2025 Season Overview
The 2024/2025 FA Cup season will witness some significant changes to the competition rules. For one, it would be the first edition of the tournament without replays in the first round. So, if a game should end in a tie, both teams will go straight to penalties. Furthermore, it will be the first FA Cup where all games will be played on the weekend, with the FA citing the increasing number of UEFA competition games as the reason for these changes.
This shift adds a new level of unpredictability to the tournament, as teams must adjust their strategies to avoid a tense shootout. Our experts thoroughly analyse team form, current performance, and historical data to provide accurate insights. Our FA Cup mathematical predictions may give you a better chance to win a bet.
The English FA Cup final 2025 will once again be held at Wembley Stadium, and there’ll be 745 entrants —653 in the qualifying rounds and 124 in the main rounds (92 from the top four leagues and 32 from the previous round). Also, the final will be held on the 17th of May 2025, one week before the final game of the EPL season, instead of a week after, like in previous editions. Manchester City is the favourite to claim the title after losing the final last season. Arsenal will also be gunning for their 15th trophy but will have to be wary of an eager Arne Slot-led Liverpool and a young but exciting Chelsea side.
