EFL Cup (Carabao Cup) History

The EFL Cup, or Carabao Cup for sponsorship reasons, is one of the oldest knockout competitions in English football. Stanley Rous was behind the original idea for the League Cup and wanted it to be a consolation cup for clubs that had been knocked out of the more prestigious FA Cup.

After years of planning, the idea for the England EFL Cup was finally implemented by Football League Secretary Alan Hardaker, and the first edition was held in the 1960-61 season. It was met with criticism, especially from those who felt that clubs should be left to focus more on the European League (now the UEFA Champions League).

Despite the pushback, the tournament went as planned, with Aston Villa emerging as the inaugural winner after defeating Rotherham United by 3 goals to 2 in the final over two legs. Norwich City, Birmingham City, and Leicester City won the next three editions.

Six years after the first edition, the first League Cup final was held at Wembley, with Queens Park Rangers defeating West Bromwich Albion. The 1967 edition was also the first edition where winners of the EFL Cup were granted qualification for European competitions, but only winners in the top division were given a spot. Tottenham Hotspur was the first team to earn a European qualification from the League Cup.

In the EFL today, Liverpool has won the most titles, having been victorious on 10 occasions. They also remain the only team, together with Manchester City, to have won four trophies in successive years. Man City has won 8 trophies and is followed by rivals Manchester United with 6 and Chelsea with 5.

Structure

All 92 members of the Premier League and English Football League (Championship, League One, and League Two) are invited to participate in EFL Cup games. The competition is divided into seven rounds, where every fixture, except the final, is determined by a random draw.

Teams that are involved in European competitions during the season don’t enter the competition until the third round, and if the number of byes causes an odd number of teams to enter the third round, the highest-placed team in the Premier League from the previous season also gets a bye.

All EFL Cup matches are single-legged, excluding the semi-finals, which feature home and away fixtures. In the tournament’s first six editions, even the final was two-legged. Now, games that end in a tie go straight to penalties unless it’s the semi-final or final, where extra time is played. The winner of the EFL Cup earns a group-stage qualification to the UEFA Conference League.

EFL Cup Season Predictions

Last year’s FA Cup saw Liverpool legend Jurgen Klopp win his final trophy with the club as they defeated Chelsea in a highly-tensed final. This year, the Reds are being led by Arne Slot and will be looking to make it their third EFL cup trophy in five years. Mohammed Salah has also been firing on all guns since the season kicked off in August, and if he should maintain his current form, nothing is stopping him from clinching the right EFL results and trophy.

However, it won’t be an easy task, as they have to battle against an exciting Arsenal team, who are eager for silverware. Tottenham Hotspurs, led by Ange Postecoglou, will also be looking to end their years-long title drought and clinch a European spot after missing out last year.

Newcastle is another team that will be gunning for the title. The Magpies have been runner-up twice, recently losing to Manchester United in the final of the 2022-23 edition. With forwards like Alexander Isak, Anthony Gordon, and Jacob Murphy in excellent form, plus no European competition forcing rotation, they looked poised to win their first major trophy in decades.
