Valencia
The Spanish club has made a powerful start to the EuroLeague season, winning all four of its games. Valencia also performed impressively in last season’s regular season, securing a playoff spot from second place. The schedule may not have been the toughest, but the team took full advantage of it. They opened with a hard-fought away win over Beşiktaş, 96–94, before crushing Baskonia at home, 111–88. In their third game, they defeated Lyon on the road, 102–95, and in their most recent outing, they beat Hapoel Tel Aviv on their home court, 93–82.
Their start on the domestic scene has been far less impressive, with just one win in three games, but there is still plenty of time to turn things around.
Olympiacos
The Greek club enters the season as the reigning champions and has looked solid, securing three wins in four EuroLeague games. In their latest outing, Olympiacos comfortably defeated experienced side Anadolu Efes at home, 89–66. Their only defeat in the current regular season came away to Virtus Bologna in a tightly contested game, 94–96.
There is no doubt that Olympiacos will look to defend their title. The team boasts a high level of individual talent, and reaching the playoffs should not be a problem. In the Greek league, the club began with two wins and will also be involved in a title race with their main rivals, Panathinaikos.
Head-to-head meetings
Statistics show that these teams have enjoyed mixed success against each other. Last season, Valencia won both meetings, prevailing 99–92 on the road and 85–84 at home.
Prediction
I expect an entertaining clash between two strong teams that have made excellent starts to their EuroLeague campaigns. The bookmakers consider Olympiacos slight favorites, as the club are the reigning champions. However, Valencia have no intention of ending their impressive winning run and will also be eager to please their home crowd. The over 173.5 total points market looks like an attractive option here.
