On May 29, in the third round of Roland Garros, João Fonseca and Novak Djokovic will face off. Here is my prediction for their clash.

An important match for the young Brazilian

Fonseca could become a rising star in world tennis, as he will only turn 20 at the end of the summer. The athlete is ranked 30th in the world, but is not having the brightest season, having dropped six positions since the beginning of the year.

The Brazilian is not a typical South American player, as he is very comfortable on hard courts. Here, he managed to defeat the little-known Frenchman Luca Pavlovic – 7:6, 6:4, 6:2, and in the second round had to stage a comeback against Croatian Przmic, winning 3:6, 4:6, 6:3, 6:1, 6:2. Currently, Fonseca is ranked a high fifth among the contenders for the title.

Djokovic has a chance at a record

Tennis fans know well that Djokovic dreams of becoming the absolute record holder for Grand Slam titles—he currently shares the top spot with Margaret Court, having won 24 majors. Time is catching up; the Serb is 39 years old and cannot participate in every tournament, although he reached the final at the Australian Open, where he lost to Alcaraz.

Right now, things are working out in Djokovic's favor: the toughest opponents are already out, Sinner was eliminated in a surprise, and Alcaraz is skipping the tournament, so the path is essentially open. Of course, it's not an easy task, as the opponents are young and motivated. In this Roland Garros, Nole has already beaten two French players: Mpetchi Perricard – 5:7, 7:5, 6:1, 6:4 and Royer – 6:3, 6:2, 6:7, 6:3.

Prediction

The athletes have never played each other before, which is not surprising given that the Brazilian is 19 years younger than his illustrious rival. Initially, bookmakers gave the Serb a slight edge, and now the odds for his success are gradually dropping. Much will depend on Djokovic himself, his physical condition, and whether he can make it to the title. I'm backing Nole to win with a -3.5 game handicap at 1.9 odds.
