The EuroLeague regular season officially tips off on September 24, with the campaign opening with a clash between Dubai and Real Madrid. Here is my prediction for the upcoming battle.
Dubai
Last season, Dubai made its EuroLeague debut. The team did not look out of place among the giants of European basketball, winning exactly half of its games. That record was not enough to break into the top 10, as Dubai finished 11th, two wins outside the play-in places.
Last season, the team also won the ABA League, defeating Partizan in the final. Dubai have already played one official game this season, losing to Real Madrid in the EuroLeague Super Cup. They played excellent basketball and forced overtime, but then fell to Fenerbahce 77–85 in the third-place game. I expect the club to fight for a place in the EuroLeague playoffs.
Real Madrid
The Spanish powerhouse once again had a strong regular season in the EuroLeague last year and reached the final, but lost the title clash to Olympiacos 85–92. Playing such an opponent in Athens, however, was never going to be easy.
Real have already lifted one trophy this season, winning the EuroLeague Super Cup. They defeated Dubai in the semifinals and then got their revenge on Olympiacos in the final, winning 93–89. Another strong season is expected from the club, although competing in several tournaments is always demanding, especially with such a high level of competition.
Head-to-head meetings
Looking back at last season, the teams split their home games, with Real winning 107–93 and Dubai responding with a 93–85 victory. The sides have already met this season in the EuroLeague Super Cup, where the Spanish club prevailed only in overtime, 98–95.
Prediction
I expect an entertaining and spectacular game, as both teams like to play with an attacking mindset in their head-to-head meetings. There is no obvious favorite in this matchup, and much will depend on the teams’ mentality and how the key players perform. I will not overcomplicate things and will back over 169.5 total points, a pick supported by the statistics.
