History and Format of AFCON
The idea for the African Cup of Nations came in 1956, the same year as the formation of the continent’s football governing body, the Confederation of African Football (CAF). The first edition was held the following year in Sudan, and only three teams participated: Sudan, Egypt, and Ethiopia. Egypt defeated Ethiopia in the final to claim the first-ever AFCON title.
The competition finals continued to host only four teams until the 1968 edition, when it was increased to 8, and then 1992, when 12 teams participated. It was finally increased to 16 in the tournament’s 20th edition, though only 15 teams would go on to the finals due to the Super Eagles of Nigeria pulling out for political reasons.
Since 2019, 24 teams have participated in finals, with 52 AFCON games played every tournament. There’s a qualification phase where every team affiliated with CAF is drawn into 12 groups of four teams each. 23 teams qualify from these groups to join the host nation in the finals.
In the final phase, there are six groups of four teams, each with the top two in every group automatically qualifying for the round of 16. They are joined by the four best third-placed teams. The 16 teams play against themselves for a spot in the quarterfinals, and then the semi-finals are played. Losers of the semi-finals play a third-place tie for the bronze medal, while the two winners compete in the final for a chance to be called champions.
