Ridotto – the first casino in the world: the reason for its opening
In 1638, the first casino in the world, "Ridotto," was founded in Venice. It was established to eliminate gambling from makeshift locations and taverns and to generate revenue for the state from the burgeoning gambling market.
Anyone with an appropriate budget could play in the casino. These establishments had a strict dress code, attracting mainly nobility.
Ridotto was the first casino officially sanctioned by the state. By aligning the interests of commercial players and government authorities, Ridotto became an early model for using revenue from gambling to support state finances.
